La Serenissima

Sighs of anguish echoed over the water as prisoners crossed the Bridge of Sighs from the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace, into the connecting prisons. The Bridge of Sighs offered prisoners a last view of their beautiful Venice before they were taken to their cells.
This is a far cry from the ambience of Venice today. Every few steps, sights unfold in front of you to make you sigh, but from pure adoration. Piazza San Marco, a gondolier singing while he works and impossibly charming, miniature bridges crossing the canels are familiar ones.
To experience some of the mystery of long ago, get well and truly lost among the labyrinth of alleys and walk away from the main tourist areas into Dorsoduro and Castello.
Streets and canals widen and groups of locals gather after church or before lunch. Village cats bask beneath the sun and it's entirely possible to find yourself completey alone to soak up the historic, seductive atmosphere.
Although you won't see as many couples kissing beneath lamp posts, the day to day life of locals in fruit shops, pizzerias and on the sparkling, green tinged canals, makes for an enriching and unusually romantic time.
Getting off the beaten path often rewards us with fascinating discoveries and Venice is no exception; apart from the added magic that exudes from La Serenissima (the Most Serene Republic).
