So You Think You Can Dance?
March 4th 2008 08:18
An aerobics genius, jazz extraordinaire and sexy ballroom maestro ended up as the bottom 3 males in the Australian version of 'So You Think You Can Dance' last night.
As a professional dancer, I was surrounded by varying degrees of outrage, sarcasm and scathing comments directed towards the "clearly ignorant" voting public.
My view? Dancing across the world is, quite simply, completely open to interpretation. Most forms of dance originate from expressions of joy, passion, sensuality, anger...the list is endless. Emotion can out-weigh technique.
Romani Dance, more commonly, if often incorrectly, known as 'Gypsy Dance' is about breathing life into the art itself. Known for its passionate nature, the dance also represents freedom of spiritual expression of an unfairly oppressed people.
Passed on through the years from ancient, Scottish folk customs, Highland Dance was originally performed by men only, to bag pipes. This highly precise artform means a celebration of victory.
In Japan, a famous, traditional dance is the 'Bon Odori' performed during the Bon festival. During the evening, happy music welcomes ancestor's souls.
So, although my professional sensibilities are inclined to agree with my peers, my heart knows that dancing is a multi-layered pursuit steeped in history. Crossing oceans and cultures, it continues to grow with each interpretation.
And that's a good thing.
