Queensland Road Trip
October 1st 2008 08:17
Haven't you always wanted to turn down that little dirt track running off the highway, just to see where it leads?
Road trips allow spontaneous detours, with time to enjoy the secluded beach at the end of the track (or the dead end, depending on your luck!)
Driving up the Bruce Highway, towards North Queensland, Australia, is an easy one. Over four days or more, from the Gold Coast to Airlie Beach, you can take in small, country towns, spectacular coastline and iconic Queensland sights: think The Big Pineapple.
Four and a half hours north of the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay makes for an action packed or relaxing stop. Whether you break for lunch on the beach and a quick dip in the calm waters of the bay, or stay longer to trek over to Fraser Island, Hervey Bay's classic 'beach town' feel is a perfect detour.
A morning or afternoon drive from here, passing through Bundaberg or Gladstone if you choose, you'll arrive at the river city of Rockhampton, or the up and coming seaside jewel that is Yeppoon.
From here to Sarina (only worth a quick stop at Sarina Beach) or Mackay, the four or so hour trip can be on the dull side with nothing but scrub for miles. Great timing to pull out your favourite tunes and sing at the top of your lungs to the trees.
A short two hour trip from Mackay will get you to Airlie Beach. The scenery becomes more tropical, green and mountainous with sugar cane lining the road. A haven for backpackers, families and luxury travellers alike, the restaurants, giant lagoon and beach inspired shops will compel you to linger and inspire you on your way to the next road trip.
