Santa in New York
December 20th 2008 04:55
A beautiful woman sits under the gaze of a wintry sun, wrapped in fine fabric amidst twisted, glittering vines. The thoughtful eyes of a painter stare at passing shoppers, perhaps looking for inspiration to colour the blank paper covering an old-fashioned easel.
These are not scenes from a castle in Scotland or a Parisian street, but the much celebrated Christmas window displays at Bergdorf Goodman, New York. Although the windows are a highlight, walking into the store itself is like entering Christmas fantasy land, on a very substantial budget.
Holiday season in New York means ice skating in Central Park, carols competing with traffic noise, scarves, hats, snow and an abundance of good cheer spiked with the fierce energy the city is known for.
Downtown's narrow streets are coloured with bright lights around Wall Street, Soho glitters with decorations woven between the buildings and Times Square seems even more alive as it speeds towards the oncoming New Years Eve celebrations.
On the subway, mothers sit hemmed in on either side by shopping bags and toddlers, the odd teenager busts out a tune playing on a permanently attached ipod and an endless array of sharply dressed business people get on and off without so much as a break in their phone conversations.
It's certainly business as usual, the business of pure adrenalin, but merrily laced through with a good dash of tinsel and a boppy rendition of 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'. Lucky Santa.
