Gold Coast Indy - Living On The Track
October 15th 2008 09:35
As this year's Nikon Indy 300 roars into action on Queensland's Gold Coast, those of us living on the track face traffic delays, noise and inebriated visitors - months before the event starts on Thursday October 23rd.
We do get to drive on the 'track' to work each day, attend the event for free and immerse ourselves in the adrenalin inducing atmosphere like no-one else.
However, forget pizza delivery from anywhere outside Surfers Paradise, forget friends popping over without an Indy ticket (or excessive patience to deal with the traffic jams), forget being on time to work and, well...forget sleeping.
There are many residents within the precincts of the infamous event, from Main Beach to Surfers Paradise, divided into 'love it' or 'hate it' teams over the debatable privilege of living inside a race track for most of October each year.
At the end of the day, despite the gangs of obscenity spewing, disorderly men, rubbish strewn pathways and over-priced drinks, Indy, and living amongst it, has it's highpoints:
- Seeing the F1 11 dump and burn each day from a private balcony.
- Free, nightly entertainment.
- Waking up to the roar of engines, beginning the daily excitement.
- 'People Watching', from the comfort of home (oh, the things you see!)
So, if, like me, you live on the track, I hope you can make the most of the good points. If you've never been, it's worth a look and, to the blind drunk, screaming, whistling, vomiting morons: Some of the girls on the balconies have been paid to be topless and entertain the masses, others (usually the fully clothed ones) are probably just hanging out their washing for work the next day, so...just have another beer and pass out already, so we can all enjoy ourselves.
