Halloween

Ghosts and hostile supernatural forces are free to wander the earth as the line between the two worlds grows thin at Samhain. This ancient Celtic belief, denoting the end of summer, has spurred a mixture of celebrations world wide.
Giant pumpkins, costume parties and 'trick or treat' characterises the October 31st celebrations in Australia, and more so in the United States. 'Trick or treating' is believed, by many, to have originated from petrified, Celtic villagers trying to please wandering spirits by offering food; in order to avoid the demonic rage that could destroy their homes and crops.
To this day, Halloween in Ireland is still celebrated by 'trick or treating', bonfires are lit throughout the country and games like 'snap-apple' are played.
All Soul's Day, which takes place on November 2nd, is a three day celebration beginning October 31st in Latin America, Mexico and Spain. It is believed the dead return to their earthly homes on Halloween, and in order to honour deceased relatives, altars are constructed and decorated wtih flowers, candy and photographs.
From sacrificial bonfires carried out by ancient Druids, to children dressing as witches and ghosts to claim their share of candy, 'All Hallows' Eve' is a strange blend of traditions and religious beliefs that, throughout the ages, has retained its magical appeal for people across the world.
