Festival Madness
September 19th 2010 08:38
No, I'm not talking dagwood dogs, ferris wheels and screaming teenagers 'pashing and dashing' in the dark corners of the Ghost Train.
The type of festival madness that's taken the world by storm boasts eclectic line-ups of musicians and artists ranging from Wolfmother and John Butler Trio to regulars, like Lily Allen and' fresh out of retirement' legends, Crowded House.
Forget the days of drinking warm beer out of paper cups - wine connoisseurs are now catered for with Moroccan inspired tents and custom built, on-site themed pubs with Ibiza themed cocktails and spirits to quench any alcohol fuelled thirst.
And the food! Jamaican, Thai, Turkish, Italian, German, Danish, Spanish and good old pies with mushy peas can be found hidden in the depths of cosy shelters under shady trees.
Open air amphitheatres play host to thousands of fans rocking out beneath starry skies, their voices roaring with the notes of their favourite tunes, screaming for more from the music gods on stage.
Smaller, intimate tents gather in the faithful for alternate, folk and acoustic sounds. Others almost burst under the sweat and enthusiasm of dancers learning tango, belly dancing and yoga. Giant teepee tents glow with the lights from DJ's tables and bean bags lay in wait for tired feet under flower filled arches. Still haven't had enough? Try a 5:00am dawn ceremony with chanting monks and breathtaking sunrises - if you make it that far.
My top festival tips to survive the madness? Book accommodation early. Always bring a poncho. Gum boots or thongs? It doesn't matter as long as it's comfortable. Carry tissues - always (girls). Drink water. Other than that - if you're in the right country at the right time, the best thing to do is, quite simply...GO!
Glastonbury - UK, Splendour in the Grass - Aus, Woodford Folk Festival - Aus, V Festival - UK, Coachella Valley Music and Arts - US, Roskilde Festival - Denmark, Fuji Rock Festival - Japan, Sonar - Spain.
