Economical Travel Ideas in Australia
March 27th 2009 10:39
We're all bombarded with dire news of the world's economy, so where does that leave die-hard travellers desperate to embark on a new adventure? Especially if your income no longer supports such expensive jaunts?
Cheer up, travel is possible on the smallest of budgets, and, without expectations of five-star accommodation and flights on the premier airlines, a whole new world of travel opens up - if you're open to it. Best of all - views are free! All you need is a cheap, fold up camping chair to be comfy and enjoy...(and maybe a special on your favourite wine at the bottle -o).
Camping
Sounds like an obvious choice, but still, many people baulk at the idea. Camping can range from pitching a tent on Moreton Island, Queensland, right on the beach, to paying under AU$50 to surround yourself with other campers in a resort-like complex, complete with pools, tennis courts and on-site restaurants. Australia offers world-class camp sites, in areas surrounded by rainforests, beaches and laid-back towns. Options include Terrace Reserve Holiday Park in Brunswick Heads, NSW and Beachcomber Coconut Village in Mission Beach, QLD.
Road Trips
Australia is so easily accessible via highways, that roadtrips are virtually a no-brainer. Queensland's coastline offers famous areas, such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns, as well as small coastal villages simply sitting in the sun, awaiting your discovery (where you can still buy a burger for AU$5).
Stay in Backpacker Hostels
Groans and stories of bedbugs, noisy inmates and communal showers often greet this suggestion. However, generally from those who've never experienced a backerpacker hostel. Especially in Australia, within the YHA network, hostels are usually clean, safe and secure.
Many boast pools, games rooms and central locations and cater to families with cheap private rooms, as well as same-sex travellers with female and male dorms. Don't knock it until you've tried it - it may just mean the difference between having a holiday or not.
And, a holiday where the accommodation is not the reason for going, often ends up being an experience worth remembering due to the extra incentive to get out amongst it!
