Bali - Beauty and Bombs
November 2nd 2008 08:33
Our van pulled up to a 5 star hotel in Seminyak and was promptly and thoroughly searched for explosives. The misguided driver, who'd thoughtfully pointed out the jail holding Schapelle Corby as a prime tourist destination, shook his head and mumbled about extra security and government warnings.
You see, our fear of terrorism destroys their ability to make a living - and many are desperate.
Ushered into the quiet luxury of a private villa, adorned with lotus ponds, spas and day beds for a fraction of the price elsewhere, the world beyond disappeared under a veil of bliss. Horrors haven't touched the swimming pools and and day spas within the hotel's boundries. Guests still enjoy the perceived safety of the confines, comforted by the security men patrolling the beaches and main entries.
The restaurants flanking Legian's beach strip are also splattered with security; moving parked cars along and adding to the appearance of safety.
Kuta continues its high energy vibe and the clubs remain packed to the rafters. Resolute Bali lovers kick on into the wee hours with a marked lack of concern and the shirtless Bintang beer brigades still roam the streets on mopeds.
Most notably, the Balinese ensure the beauty of Bali still shines through, despite the struggle to survive with less and less tourism to help feed their families. Hindu ceremonies take place with serenity and smiles are never far from their faces.
Bali remains a land of easy hospitality, spiritual quests and natural beauty, despite the oppression they face under a cloud of terrorism.
